AUSTIN — Austin police have charged a man with attempted capital murder after police say the man tried to shoot an officer with a stolen handgun.

Andrew Jones, 20, remained in the Travis County Jail Saturday with bail set at $1,040,000, according to jail records.

The incident occurred Thursday night in North Austin after a high-speed chase that nearly turned deadly for one Austin police officer, according to an arrest affidavit.

The officer tried to pull over Jones on Interstate 35 after a license plate check showed the Toyota Camry he was driving was stolen, the affidavit said. Jones sped off and later crashed the car on Tech Ridge Boulevard, then fled on foot, the affidavit said. He tripped, and when an officer approached, Jones tried to fire a handgun at him, the affidavit said.

Though the Sig Sauer 9 mm gun was loaded, it did not fire. After police shot Jones with a Taser three times, he was taken into custody. The gun was later determined to have been stolen in Pflugerville on Thursday.
