ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Police broke up a cockfight Sunday and arrested a man who admitted to hosting it.
A Neighbor called police and said noise coming from a secluded property nearby made him think a cockfight was in progress, KGTV reported. According to Escondido Police Sgt. Chris Lick, officers arrived at the beginning of the cockfight and found people watching and betting on it.
During police questioning, Martin Flores Padron said he was the host of the illegal operation. Officers took him into custody and he now faces multiple charges of animal cruelty, including specific sanctions for cockfighting and being in the country illegally, police said.
Jail records indicate Padron was booked on $40,000 bail and scheduled to be arraigned at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Vista courthouse.
Police rescued about 50 roosters, which are now in the custody of the San Diego Humane Society.
