BEECH GROVE, Ind. — Police say a Beech Grove police officer was dragged nearly three-quarters of a mile by a motorist trying to flee after a traffic stop.

Thirty-five-year-old Lt. Scott Ferrer suffered cuts, bruises and abrasions. Beech Grove Deputy Police Chief Kellen Malloy says Ferrer required sutures for his injuries.

Police say the incident happened about 12:30 p.m. Thursday when Ferrer, an 11-year veteran of the department, pulled over Matthew Thomas of Indianapolis.

After Ferrer made the traffic stop, Thomas took off. Police say Ferrer reached into the car to try to prevent Thomas from leaving the scene and was dragged.

Police eventually caught and arrested Thomas, and charges are pending.
