YONKERS, N.Y. — Police say an officer kept a teenager from being hit by a car as the youth walked along a suburban New York highway, but the officer ended up being hit himself.
Westchester County police say Officer Paul DeSousa was treated and released from a hospital after the rescue Friday morning.
Police say DeSousa noticed the 15-year-old walking along the Saw Mill River Parkway shoulder in Yonkers and got out of his patrol car to speak with him. Then an approaching car went out of control and hurtled at the two.
DeSousa quickly hoisted the boy onto the patrol car’s hood. Seconds later, the other car hit and hurled DeSousa into the air.
The teen wasn’t injured.
The 27-year-old DeSousa is a military veteran who joined the force a year ago.
