BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A piece of the World Trade Center was transported across the country for police and firefighters to pay their respects, The Bakersfield Californian reported.
The steel girder weighs six-and-a-half-tons and made its way through the city to be part of a 9/11 memorial placed between the Bakersfield police and fire department.
Firefighters travelled to New York last month to retrieve the girder and were accompanied by New York City firefighters as they accepted it from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
A fire department nonprofit will fund the project at no cost to taxpayers.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, over 72 officers died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Many more have passed away from illnesses contracted while working in hazardous conditions following the attack.
