ALEXANDRIA, Va. — An officer’s wife found a way to celebrate the life of LEOs killed in the line of duty, ABC News reported.
Tracy McEnamy fosters dogs rescued by the organization Operation Paws for Home and is also the wife of a Maryland officer. A recent influx of officer deaths has hit too close to home for McEnamy.
“As a wife, it’s scary for me that we’ve lost that many police officers,” she told the news site. “It’s very close to our hearts and we wanted a way to honor those who gave their life in the line of duty.”
After one of her dogs gave birth to a litter of 10 puppies, McEnamy came up with her token of appreciation — naming puppies after fallen officers.
Families of the deceased cops got word of McEnamy’s actions and reached out to her to adopt.
The aunt of Prince William County (Va.) Officer Ashley Guindon, who was shot and killed last month, was in the process of adopting a dog. A puppy named Colson after Prince George’s County (Md.) Officer Jacai Colson, who was killed in a blue-on-blue, was being held for his parents.
Adoptions are just one way people have reached out to McEnamy after being touched by her gesture. Some who can’t afford to adopt have reached out to the organization to help cover adoption fees, which total $300 a dog.
The last step of the adoption process is speaking with the families. That process has touched McEnamy.
“Talking to these families is extremely touching and emotional and it’s bringing healing to the families and even my husband and I,” she said. “We’re honored to be a part of the process and of these stories.”
