EAST ORANGE, N.J. — A veteran police sergeant’s vest is being credited for saving him in a Wednesday confrontation that ended in gunfire.

NBC New York and ABC-7 report Sergeant Mike Williams was hit in the stomach area when a suspect on a bicycle fired his weapon multiple times during a stop.

Williams returned fire, but all three of his shots missed the suspect, who was taken into custody as backup officers arrived.

Williams was transported to a hospital where he is reported in good condition, ABC7 reported.

The suspect, 29-year-old Robert O’Neil faces charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. It is unclear why he was originally stopped.
