ST. CLOUD, Minn. — No charges will be filed against a Minnesota hospital security guard who used a stun gun against a patient who killed a sheriff’s deputy.
The Stearns County Attorney’s office said Wednesday that the security officer’s actions were justified.
The guard at St. Cloud Hospital used a stun gun to incapacitate the patient, 50-year-old Danny Leroy Hammond, after Hammond snatched Aitkin County Deputy Steven Sandberg’s gun and fatally shot him.
The report says the stun gun probably sent Hammond into cardiac arrest. Despite immediate medical attention, Hammond died.
The Star Tribune reports the chief of the Stearns County Attorney’s criminal division concluded the guard’s use of force “was reasonable and authorized,” and no charges will be filed.
Hammond was in the hospital after an apparent suicide attempt. Authorities say Hammond had kidnapped and terrorized his wife.
