NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans police say an officer shot and killed a driver early Monday after a shot was fired during a traffic stop.
Police spokesman Frank Robertson says Officer Fredrick Carter stopped a van for a traffic violation. Robertson says Carter was approaching the van when a shot was fired.
Robertson said in a news release that Carter, a 15 year veteran of the police department, returned to his patrol car for cover and fired several shots toward van killing the driver.
Police say a gun was found in the vehicle.
The name of the van’s driver wasn’t immediately released. An investigating into the shooting continues.
