What Are Glass Protection Films

Film glass protection products utilize strong window films that are designed to prevent glass from shattering by improving the structural integrity of any window. In the event the window breaks, the film will help hold the broken shards together thus reducing the likelihood of window penetration and razor sharp flying glass. They protect against bomb blasts, general breakage, burglaries, Mother Nature, and even stop or slow down bullets. The films are virtually undetectable to the human eye, films reduce the need for burglar bars or hurricane shutters and do not to yellow or distort overtime.

Post September 11th, glass protection films have become an important tool in effectively preparing physical infrastructure from possible bombings and related attacks. For decades, terrorists and extremist groups have known that explosive devices and unprotected glass form a lethal combination. During the recent World Trade Center terrorist attack, numerous deaths and injuries resulted from shards of glass, which flew up to 3/4 of a mile away from the collapsed structure.

In the Oklahoma City bombing, more than 50% of the injuries sustained were the result of flying glass. Property damage to the interior of buildings was also costly, as shattered and fallen glass left dozens of buildings unprotected from heavy rainstorms and looters. Security experts also report that more than 3,000 small bombs are exploded each year in the United States. That number is expected to increase.

An ABC news story on the terrorist attack explained that where glass retention film was used at the Pentagon, the glass remained intact. Although almost every piece of glass was broken when the jet hit the building, all of the broken shards were stuck to the film preventing deadly pieces of glass from flying.
