PHOENIX — An Arizona deputy is being recognized for going above the call of duty to help a struggling mother and her 2-year-old child.

AZFamily reports that Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Jennifer Pittman encountered the panhandling woman after a broken-down truck left the mother and her 2-year-old child stranded. Pittman said the mother was trying to save up to get two tickets back home to Mississippi.

Pittman also said the woman was “down to one package of Saltines and the water that she had from the garden hose. And that’s what her and her 2-year-old were living off of.”

Pittman and another deputy, identified as Deputy Mascorro, helped out the struggling mother and took her and her child grocery shopping to get snacks. Pittman also made sure the two made it back home.

“Talking to her, she said she was $53 short for her bus ticket home,” Pittman said. “It wasn’t even a question. I just went and withdrew 60 bucks from the ATM.”

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office posted a video of the deputy’s act of kindness and praised her actions.

“Although our deputies see these actions as simply part of their job, we want to recognize true acts of kindness and outstanding service whenever possible,” the department wrote.
