MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — Authorities say an 84-year-old woman is undergoing psychiatric evaluations after she barricaded herself inside her upstate New York apartment and held off police with a .22-caliber rifle.

Police in Middletown say the incident began late Wednesday morning when Bertha Burrows used a chair and other items to block her bedroom door. Police say she threatened to shoot her home health aide when the worker tried to enter the room.

Police evacuated the building at the apartment complex for people aged 55 and up. A state police investigator spoke with Burrows, who surrendered without incident two hours later.

Police say she taken to Orange Regional Medical Center’s Horton campus in Middletown for medical and psychiatric evaluations.
