COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police have identified the officer who was shot and wounded during a standoff at a North Side town house late last night, as well as the man later found dead inside.
Officer Sean E. Bonn, an 18-year veteran of the Police Division, remained in Ohio State University Medical Center today. He was shot in the leg but is expected to recover.
Police identified the other officer involved in the shooting as Ricky A. Crum, a 21-year veteran who was not injured.
It remains unclear whether Ryan M. Clayton, 26, was shot by police or took his own life. He was found dead in an upstairs room about two hours after police were called to the town house he shared with his mother, Deborah Cornett.
Police said they were summoned to Clayton’s apartment at 11:45 p.m. for a domestic disturbance.
Bonn was shot as he and other officers knocked on the door at 2235 Webster Canyon Court, Apt. D. Police said Clayton fired through the door.
The officers returned fire and called for help. More rounds were fired from the apartment, but Bonn was carried to safety and no other officers were injured.
SWAT officers surrounded the building, eventually fired tear gas inside and then entered.
Clayton was found dead about 1:45 a.m. His mother had fled the apartment at some point during the incident, but it was not clear when.
The investigation is ongoing.
