TASWELL, Ind. - The driver of a stolen car fatally shot himself Wednesday after leading police on a chase that ended when he crashed into another vehicle, Indiana State Police said.
Two people in the other vehicle were injured, as was the man’s girlfriend, who was in the car with him.
Police said Jody Anderson, 23, of Louisville, Ky., died at University of Louisville Hospital, where he was airlifted after police said he shot himself in the head.
Anderson fled after a state trooper tried to stop him for speeding at 91 mph on Interstate 64 in Perry County in southern Indiana, authorities said. Police then determined that the Ford Mustang he was driving had been stolen.
Police tracked the stolen car to Indiana 64 near Taswell in Crawford County, where police set out stop sticks to try to stop Anderson. But police said Anderson drove off the road to avoid the stop sticks and lost control, traveling about 410 feet and hitting a pickup truck whose driver had pulled off the roadway. Anderson shot himself with a handgun as Trooper Rick McGill ran toward the crash, police said.
Anderson’s girlfriend, Brenda Hoskinson, 18, of Owensboro, Ky., was taken to a hospital in Paoli for treatment of minor injuries, police said. The truck’s driver, Gary Grant, 37, of Taswell, was being treated Wednesday night at University of Louisville Hospital. His wife, Tamara, 35, was treated at the scene.
