Pursuit policies: The hot debate

We’re Interested in Your Opinion

Pursuit policies are hotly debated between those who feel the risk to innocent bystanders is typically too great, those who feel a no-pursuit policy may actually make flight a more appealing alternative to pulling over and those who see the pile of extenuating circumstances that make pursuit decision-making complex. In light of the recent decision by the Salt Lake County (UT) SO to ban pursuits unless the criminal being chased is suspected of a violent felony like homicide or rape, we would like to hear what Police1 members across the country have to say.

What do you think? Do the risks involved with pursuits outweigh the benefits? Should pursuits be banned except those involving violent felons? Do no-pursuit policies entice people to run? Under what conditions should a pursuit be allowed…or should they be allowed at all? We’d love to hear from you.

Utah Sheriff Puts Brakes on Hot Pursuits

West Valley City police officers were working DUI shifts last Thursday night when one of them spotted someone he thought was driving under the influence.

The detective tried to stop the vehicle, but the 20-year-old driver took off, leading police on a chase that reached speeds of 70 mph.

After a short chase, the 20-year-old ran a red light and was involved in an accident with two other vehicles, causing injuries to occupants of the other cars.

It turned out that police would have more reasons to stop the driver than just the suspected DUI: The car the man was driving had been stolen, and officers say they uncovered evidence of identity theft.

But, under the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office new pursuit policy, deputies would not be allowed to chase that 20-year-old under the same circumstances in their jurisdiction.
