After failing to appear in court on a robbery charge, Shakur Khabir was placed under arrest Saturday around 10 a.m. by sheriff’s deputies. According to the Sheriff’s Office, he was wanted in the state of Connecticut as a fugitive.
Detention Center personnel made a routine screening of personal property and found what the Sheriff’s Office described as “a diagram of what appeared to be a military installation and suspicious letters that appeared to be written in a Middle Eastern dialect.”
Apparently there are several important military installations nearby including Aberdeen Proving Ground and the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground.
Detention Center personnel, suspicious that Khabir could be involved in terrorist activity, notified Sheriff Rodney Kennedy and the area office of the FBI.
The course of action taken at the Detention Center was attributed by the Sheriff’s Office to the “level of high alert for terrorist activity and suspects” currently being practiced by law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office said federal agents were dispatched to the Detention Center to investigate the incident and interview Khabir.
Kennedy praised the “continued awareness” of his deputies and encouraged anyone with information about suspicious activities or persons in the area to notify the Sheriff’s Office or regional FBI office immediately.
