Mourners: Ind. trooper led by example

The Associated Press

BROWNSBURG, Ind.- Hundreds of police officers, family members and friends packed a church for the funeral of a state trooper killed while riding a bicycle to raise money for the families of fallen comrades. Mourners say Lieutenant Gary Dudley led by example as the commander of the state’s police academy.

Dudley was killed along with retired Lake County Police Chief Gary Martin when they were struck by a van along a western Indiana highway. Since he was representing state police on the ride, it was ruled he was killed in the line of duty. State police say that makes him the highest ranking state trooper to die while on duty.

Governor Daniels and police from as far away as California attended the services at Connection Pointe Christian Church in Brownsburg and Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
