Two men were in custody in west suburban Aurora early today after police seized more than half a ton of cocaine with an estimated street value of $50 million.
Police made the seizures late Monday afternoon after receiving information about cocaine dealing at a home in the 500 block of Harrison Avenue, Aurora police said.
Around 5 p.m. Monday, officers noticed a 24-year-old man allegedly placing a large container into a minivan parked in the driveway of the Harrison Avenue home. The man then got into a Dodge Intrepid and followed the van across town while police followed, according to police officials.
Police stopped the van in the 1700 block of Marywood Avenue after the 30-year-old driver failed to use his turn signal.
After the driver agreed to a search of the van, police found 21 kilos of purported cocaine.
Police obtained search warrants for both men’s homes. At the home of the driver in the 300 block of Columbia Street, police seized about one kilo of cocaine and more than $11,000 in cash. About 550 kilos of cocaine was found in the Harrison home of the 24-year-old suspect, police said.
The two men were expected to be charged today.
