SPOKANE, Wash. — Deputy Brittan Morgan was tasked with contacting citizens and urging them to evacuate ahead of a roaring wildfire, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.

The fire, which started Aug. 18, caused rapid and sweeping devastation. Deputy Morgan’s bodycam recorded the entire harrowing experience for the department as they tried to convince the last citizens who remained in their homes to evacuate.

After one last citizen refused to leave with Morgan, he and other deputies escorted people away from the area, following behind them in their vehicles. Heavy smoke and encroaching fire added to the fear and confusion of the situation.

After the deputies made it through the flames crossing the highway, Deputy Morgan showed care and empathy despite the intensity of the situation, the Facebook post says. He greets frantic residents, including the one who at first refused to leave, with calmness and understanding.

The fire is so far estimated to have killed one person and scorched at least 10,000 acres of land, the sheriff’s office reports.
