DAYTON, Ohio — What began as a shoplifting call ended in a gesture of compassion — and a teachable moment.
Body camera footage released by the Dayton Police Department shows officers responding to a May 13 incident after an off-duty undercover detective witnessed a teen stealing several items from a Walgreens store.
The detective called for backup. When officers arrived, they spoke with the teen, who admitted to taking the items because he was hungry.
“Hey man, I’m not saying what you did today wasn’t a bad thing,” one officer tells him in the body camera video. “But all things considered, you really do seem like a good kid. You’re cooperating, and you’re speaking well and remorseful.”
“I just made a bad decision,” the teen replies. “I just got out of practice, and I was hungry.”
Rather than arrest the teen, officers spoke with store staff, who chose not to press charges or issue a trespass notice.
Instead, the officers purchased the snacks he had attempted to steal and offered him a ride home.
Before parting ways, they made sure the teen understood the seriousness of the situation. They reminded him that theft is a punishable offense — but also that he had a bright future if he stayed on the right path.
