Wife of Cop Killer May Be Tried as Accessory After the Fact

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- The wife of convicted cop killer Abdiyyah ben Alkebulanyahh may go to trial as early as February on a charge that she tried to help her husband escape, prosecutors say.

Monica DeJesus, 25, is charged with accessory after the fact of murder.

Alkebulanyahh was convicted and sentenced to death last week in the Beaufort County Courthouse for the deaths of Lance Cpl. Dana Lyle Tate and Cpl. Dyke “A.J.” Coursen with an assault-style rifle.

He was caught by police under a bridge with a fanny pack around his waist containing assault-rifle ammunition. DeJesus was arrested near her car as she walked toward her husband, according to a warrant.

“It is our allegation that she was coming to pick him up and take him away from the scene where he was arrested and probably would have, had the officers not caught him,” said prosecutor Randolph Murdaugh.

DeJesus’ lawyer wants the charges thrown out because she never actually assisted her husband.

If convicted, she faces a maximum of 15 years in prison. There is no mandatory minimum sentence for the crime, Murdaugh said.
