Always completely search a suspect’s shoes, and never let a suspect handle the shoes before they are thoroughly searched. Be sure to check up into the toe area and also pull the inside bottom footpad up if it can be lifted. Check the heels and soles for alterations made by a suspect to hide contraband, especially weapons. Mini revolvers, razor blades and other weapons can be hidden, and the suspect can still walk on the shoe. Small shoe hideout traps can be made relatively easily by anyone. Also search the bottom of a suspect’s feet, as contraband can be taped to the bottoms and covered with socks and shoes.
