YUKON, Okla. — An airman is thankful to be alive after an officer’s quick response to his self-inflicted gunshot wound.

KFOR reports Officer Dave Carroll rushed to the scene after military servicemember Christopher Griffin called 911 to report that he’d shot himself in the leg.

“Blood was everywhere. The floor board was covered with blood. It looked like a little pond. Blood was all over the dash, all over the door, me, him and the fire guys,” Officer Carroll told KFOR.

Carroll stuck his index finger into the wound to the knuckle for 10 minutes in order to stop the bleeding.

“Another five minutes he would have bled out and that’s just the amount of blood he lost,” Carroll said.

The bullet had hit Griffin’s popliteal artery. He required 14 liters of blood after he was transported to the hospital.

Griffin is expected to make a full recovery.
