The laser scanner is quickly becoming adopted as the benchmark tool for mapping crime and accident scenes. It is the quickest way to document scenes with unequaled detail. The data can be used for analysis, transformed into plan drawings, animations, virtual tours and other deliverables for court. Some of the basic principles of laser scanning plus best practices will be discussed with an emphasis on admissibility in court with case citations.

Eugene Liscio is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada and is the owner of AI2-3D, a company that specializes in 3D forensic measurement, analysis and visualizations for law enforcement and legal industries. Eugene has created 3D reconstructions of shooting incidents, homicides, medical malpractice and vehicular accidents using a variety of mapping technologies for evidence of all sizes. Eugene is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, Mississauga where he teaches an Introduction to 3D Forensic Reconstruction and Mapping course as part of the Forensic Sciences Program. He is also president of the International Association of Forensic and Security Metrology (IAFSM) and is actively engaged in research focusing on 3D documentation and analysis techniques at the University of Toronto.
