NYPD forms social media tracking unit

Twitter, Facebook units will scour social media sites for wrongdoing

NEW YORK — NYPD officers are going to look more closely at Facebook and Twitter for crime-fighting clues.

Headed by new Assistant Commissioner Kevin O’Connor, a new juvenile justice unit will operate under the Community Affairs Bureau and scour social media sites for potential wrongdoing, according to the New York Daily News.

Criminals have been known to use Twitter, Facebook, and other social media to choose targets, boast about crimes, or alert one another about the location of police.

O’Connor, who was promoted from lieutenant, is known for online policing. In March, NYPD successfully arrested an alleged murderer who bragged — on Facebook — about killing a teen at a house party.
