Criminals using dogs as weapons a growing trend

Investigators believe those who can’t legally own guns turn to dogs

MINNEAPOLIS — Police are seeing an increase in the use of dogs against law enforcement in pursuit scenarios.

A Minn. officer was involved in a pursuit that was caught on tape last year in which the suspect released a dog to attack the officer.

Sheriff Dan May was able to remove the dog’s clench from his arm, but was forced to shoot the dog when it came back for him, according to CBS Minnesota.

“It’s a trend, and it’s gone on for a number of years,” said Attorney Don Dearstyne.

Some investigators have concluded that those who cannot legally own guns tend to use dogs.
