Officials say an additional 1,200 boxes are still missing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two suspects were arrested Thursday after police say they stole nearly $90,000 worth of diapers.

CBS Boston reported that Aubrey Bettis, 59, was hired to drive a truck full of diapers to an Amazon distribution facility earlier this month. Police said he abandoned the truck and sold the diapers instead.

“There’s a black market for pretty much anything that has to do with babies,” loss prevention expert David Imm told WPRI. “Diapers would be number two, formula would be number one when it comes to the black market.”

Police recovered nearly 800 boxes after receiving a tip that some diapers were being stored at a vacant business, according to WPRI. Nearly 1,200 boxes are still missing.

Bettis and Damon Martin, 41, were charged with larceny over $1,500 and conspiracy. Martin was also charged with receiving stolen goods.

Police said a warrant has been issued for a third suspect.
