ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.- Atlantic City officials have instituted a police escort to protect letter carriers delivering mail to a public-housing complex plagued by shootings.
Mail service had recently been suspended to the more than 200 residences at the Stanley Holmes Village complex.
A police investigation had prevented carriers from making deliveries. And several people had also been shot at the complex in recent months, raising safety concerns.
The lack of letter carriers had forced residents to pick up their mail at the city’s main post office.
Mayor Robert Levy says the police escort will continue until a long-term solution is worked out.
The U.S. Postal Service plans to install metal cluster boxes in the complex by early next month, enabling carriers to deliver to the complex with just a few stops.
