COOK COUNTY, Ill. — The second teenager charged in the attempted robbery of an off-duty sheriff’s sergeant that ended with the sergeant shooting and killing one of the three robbers has been ordered held on $2 million bail.
Emannuel Jackson, 15, is charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery, assistant state’s attorney Jacqueline Kwilos said today in Cook County Central Bond Court. Accompanied by his parents, the teen turned himself in at Area South headquarters at 11 p.m. Friday, according to a police report.
A second suspect, 17-year-old Devante Graham, surrendered to police on Feb. 12 and is also charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. Bail for Graham was set at $1 million.
The three teenagers approached the sergeant as he was pumping gas about 10 p.m., Feb. 10 at a Citgo station near 103rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue.
One of the robbers, identified by police as 16-year-old Deonta Dewight Mackey of the 900 block of East 104th Street, ran up to the sergeant and pointed a gun at him, according to police and surveillance video at the station.
The sergeant backed away, the video shows, dropping the nozzle and raising his arms. During the confrontation, Jackson rummaged started rummaging through the sergeant’s car, Kwilos said. Video from the scene shows someone in a grey hooded sweatshirt walking around the car and then leaning into the passenger side.
The sergeant gave over money and a pack of gum, prosecutors said, but when Mackey demanded his wallet and keys, the sergeant drew his gun and shot Mackey in the head at point-blank range.
Mackey fell to the sergeant’s feet and the other two teens scattered. The video shows the sergeant swinging his gun around to the fleeing robbers, and then pointing it down as Mackey struggled to get up.
Authorities said Mackey had 16 arrests on a rap sheet that went back to April 2008 when he was 10 years old.
His most recent arrest was last month after Chicago police say he robbed a woman of her cell phone on December 16, not far from the Citgo station, authorities said. That was his only robbery arrest.
Graham also has a long juvenile record of arrests for aggravated battery and criminal damage, prosecutors said.
