Int’l conference focuses on fighting human trafficking

ROME — United States officials say the fight against human trafficking must seek to compel corporations to ensure they aren’t facilitating modern-day slavery by knowingly or unknowingly using forced labor.

The U.S. ambassador-at-large to combat human trafficking, Luis CdeBaca, told a conference Wednesday that awareness of the issue had resulted in legislation to punish traffickers and protect victims, but the next step must involve making consumers and corporations aware.

Already, Delta Air Lines Inc. has begun training flight attendants to spot potential victims, such as women en route to forced prostitution rings, from being trafficked and to notify police upon landing.

The conference was organized by the U.S. Embassy to the Vatican.
