LONDON — A former British police officer who was jailed for assaulting and falsely arresting a business rival over a financial dispute has won an appeal for a retrial.
Ali Dizaei, 48, was convicted of misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice in February last year.
Dizaei, who was serving a four-year sentence, was freed from jail Monday after judges at the Court of Appeal reconsidered the case.
He was accused of making threats, assault, false arrest and faking evidence against Waad al-Baghdadi over a money dispute.
Judges quashed his conviction after fresh evidence emerged to cast doubt on al-Baghdadi’s credibility as a witness.
