BEDFORD, Va. — Three people face charges of impeding an investigation in connection with the 40-year-old slayings of two Maryland sisters.
Multiple media outlets reported that a grand jury in Bedford County charged Leslie Engelking with perjury on Friday. Gladys Stangee and Amy Welch-Johnson were each charged with obstruction of justice.
Media outlets say the defendants are relatives of Richard Welch. Welch has been named as a person of interest in the investigation into the 1975 slaying of 12-year-old Sheila Lyon and 10-year-old Katherine Lyon.
Richard Welch hasn’t been charged. Police have charged his nephew, Lloyd Welch Jr., with two counts of murder. Engleking and Welch-Johnson declined to comment to The Washington Post.
Stangee told WDBJ-TV recently that she did not know anything about what happened to the girls.
