CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A man is dead and a Bradley County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering from minor injuries after fighting and shooting to death a man she said attacked her at her home early Tuesday morning.
Deputy Tiffany Oakley was working the night shift, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., when she went to her home on Oak Tree Lane around 2 a.m. Tuesday for her break, according to the sheriff’s office.
That’s when “someone stepped out of the shadows and accosted her,” sheriff’s office spokesman Ed Ramsey said Tuesday. “She told him to stop and show his hands and he apparently took off and a fight ensued. He apparently tried to choke her.”
During the struggle, Oakley fired her weapon, mortally wounding the attacker. He died later at a local hospital.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday afternoon identified him as Allan F. White III, 23, a man Bradley County court records show had violence in his past.
General Sessions Court officials said White had been convicted of domestic assault and resisting arrest in 2010. He was charged again with domestic assault in 2012, but he paid court costs and was placed on probation and the charges were dismissed.
Criminal Court officials said White was convicted in 2012 of burglary and theft over $1,000 and also of possession of marijuana in a separate case the same year.
TBI officials said an autopsy is being performed. The autopsy results and other information collected in the investigation will be turned over to the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
“Our agents are working to collect evidence and conduct any and all relevant interviews as the investigation progresses,” TBI spokesman Josh DeVine said in a statement.
Oakley was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the TBI investigation.
Oakley’s husband was not home at the time of the shooting, according to Bradley County officials.
Ramsey said Oakley, who has been with the department for two years, was “all right” after being checked out by local medical personnel.
“It was a pretty strenuous fight and she was bruised up pretty good. From what I heard, he was out to do her in, it surely sounded like,” he said. Ramsey said the deputy told investigators she didn’t know the attacker.
Earlier this year, Oakley had a run-in with another suspect.
In the March 14 incident, deputies were on Georgetown Road near the Bradley County/Meigs County line, chasing a man wanted for violating probation.
Authorities said David Paul Kadlec, 46, punched the deputy when she tried to arrest him and escaped. Kadlec was on the loose for a week before the sheriff’s office took him into custody.
