RALEIGH, N.C. — Police dogs employed in Raleigh and Mecklenburg County will be able to return to their handlers when they become unfit to work as part of a bill moving through the North Carolina legislature.
The Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday changing Raleigh’s city charter to allow for the donation of dogs, horses and other animals to their former handlers when they are unfit for service. The bill also extends that right to cities in Mecklenburg County, including Charlotte.
Because the animals are owned by the city, they are often subject to guidelines for the sale of public property, which often require a private sale or public bidding.
The bill now goes to the House for the approval of changes to include cities in Mecklenburg County.
