MILWAUKEE — Three Milwaukee police officers involved in the arrest of Derek Williams will not face federal criminal charges in connection with his death, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

There is not sufficient evidence to prove a case against any officers, a news release says. However, the release does not mention a wide-ranging review of whether the U.S. Department of Justice should sue the Police Department for a series of possible civil rights violations, known as a pattern and practice investigation. That review has been under way for several months.

The Police Department, Milwaukee County district attorney’s office and Fire and Police Commission all cleared the officers of wrongdoing soon after. All three re-opened their reviews after the medical examiner’s office changed the manner of death from natural to homicide as a result of a Journal Sentinel investigation.
