DALLAS — Dallas police were investigating a shooting by an off-duty officer Thursday near the Dallas VA Medical Center in east Oak Cliff.
The shooting followed another incident involving Dallas officers in Far North Dallas late Wednesday.
The officer in east Oak Cliff shot a man who wounded a woman about 6:45 p.m. in the 4700 block of Veterans Drive, near East Ledbetter Drive and South Lancaster Road.
The man and woman, whose names were not released, were hospitalized in critical condition but are expected to survive, police say. The officer, who also was not identified, was not hurt.
Police said the woman was stopped in her vehicle at an intersection when the man pulled up beside her. The two exchanged words before the man opened fire. Witnesses said the woman was shot in the jaw.
The officer, who had been attending a family event in the area, was “in the right place at the right time” and intervened, Deputy Chief Gil Garza said.
“The suspect engaged the officer,” who shot him, Garza said.
Witnesses reported hearing about six shots.
Police said they didn’t know what had sparked the dispute between the man and woman.
Thursday night’s shooting was the fourth involving Dallas police in two weeks. Dallas officers have shot 11 people this year. Seven died.
One was unarmed, and police say he charged at an officer.
