WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A West Palm Beach Police Department officer has died after falling ill during a field tryout the previous day, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Officer Jeremy Boykins, a two-year veteran of the department, died Sept. 10 after participating in a tryout for the department’s Emergency Field Force team. A department release did not specify the cause or nature of the illness.

The 29-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery on Monday night, according to the report. Despite efforts to save him, Boykins died the following morning.

“Jeremy was not only a dedicated officer but also a beloved friend and colleague to many of us,” Police Chief Frank Adderley said. “During this difficult time, we ask that you keep Jeremy’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

Boykins joined the department in May 2022 and was recognized on several occasions for his dedication to public service, including receiving the Anthony Testa Tactical Lifesaving Award for saving a gunshot victim. He is survived by his wife and two children, according to the report.
