SUNSET, La. — The Sunset police officer who was shot responding to domestic dispute and one of stabbing victims have died. The suspect was arrested after he crashed and holed up inside a mini-mart, The Acadiana Advocate reported. The officer has been identified as Henry Nelson

The Aug. 26 incident began when Nelson, 51, responded to a call of two people who had been stabbed, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told the publication. Nelson was shot by the suspect.

The suspect then fled to an Exxon gas station where he crashed his vehicle into the building to gain entry.

The suspect’s brother and police negotiators were on the scene trying to get the suspect to surrender.

Eventually the SWAT team came in and used tear gas to get him out.

There were no hostages, despite previous reports to the contrary.

The wounded officer was airlifted to a hospital where he died of injuries. One of the stabbing victims died from sustained injuries as well.
