TAOS, N.M. — The Taos Police Department said they are reviewing an officer’s actions during a noise complaint after footage revealed a confrontation between police and a suspect who threatened one officer’s family, Taos News reported.
The incident on June 10 was captured by body cameras worn by officers and obtained by the publication through the Inspection of Public Records Act.
Officers arrived to a residence just before dawn and found rock music blaring from a parked truck. The suspect, Frank Olonia Jr., was standing outside of his house and told officers there were demons inside.
As seen in the video, the conversation becomes aggressive quickly and Officer Brandt Warnan tells Olonia he needs to change his attitude. Arguments continue for several minutes before another officer calmly tells Olonia neighbors were complaining of the noise, at which point Olonia opens his truck and turns off the radio.
Warman then tells Olonia he will be arrested if they have to return.
“If I have to come back here one more time tonight, you’re going to [expletive] jail,” Warman tells him.
“You think I’m not connected?” Olonia responds.
Officers ask if Olonia if he’s threatening them, because Olonia previously suggested he was a part of the Mexican mafia. Another argument ensues, and Olonia tells Warman he will see him “personally.”
At one point, Olonia also threatened the officer’s children, according to KOAT.
Warman then rushes Olonia while other officers attempt to separate the two men. Olonia is then forced to the ground in the ensuing struggle.
Olonia was arrested and taken to a hospital for examination. He was charged with assault, assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. No injuries were reported, and all charges against him were later dropped.
Olonia has a long history of violence, including several counts of battery on law enforcement, according to the report
Olonia reportedly plans on filing a civil complaint. The investigation is ongoing.
