BOSTON — An officer is recovering after a man attacked him Tuesday night.
The officer responded to a reports of a suspicious person, CBS Boston reported. The suspect, 45-year-old Patrick Lowry, was drinking and urinating in public. When the officer arrived, he found Lowry and offered him a ride to a shelter.
The officer asked Lowry to empty his beer, but Lowry refused. He threw the can at the officer, striking him in the head. Witnesses told the publication Lowry then attacked the officer and the pair fell to the ground.
According to the report, the officer was punched and kicked multiple times. Lowry also tried to grab the officer’s gun.
Bystanders Frank Borghette and Shabin Shakhawath came to the officer’s aid.
“I went over, I grabbed his [Lowry’s] arm, flipped it back, and I put my knee on his chest,” Borghette told the news station.
Shakhawath held the man’s legs and said Lowry was “saying violent language and racial comments to officers.”
“We are grateful they were not harmed during the incident and thank them for their selfless actions,” Boston police said in a statement.
The officer was transferred to a local hospital for head, neck, and back injuries and was released.
