A Chicago Police officer was shot in the leg Sunday following a car chase on the Stevenson Expy., police said.
The incident started about 5:30 p.m. on Polk Street and Francisco Avenue when suspects tried to use their vehicle to strike Harrison District officers approaching them during a traffic stop, according to police.
The suspects fled, and other officers who heard the call on police radio saw the suspects’ vehicle exit the expressway at Damen, police said. The vehicle came to a stop after striking a police vehicle.
The 37-year-old officer was shot when gunfire erupted as officers tried to remove the suspects from their vehicle, police said.
It is unclear who shot the officer.
The nine-year veteran, who was being treated at a local hospital, is expected to fully recover, police Supt. Jody Weis said in a statement.
