I hate to disagree with the tip about Johnson’s Baby Shampoo (Read the tip), but as an OC instructor for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, I’ve probably OC’ed at least a thousand recruits. Invariably some of them had adverse reactions, usually panic hyperventilation. However on several occasions I had to take students in who had scratched their corneas. The ER doctor clued me in that Johnson’s, while tearless, acted as a ‘degreaser’ to the eye’s surface removing all lubricant. If there was anything at all trapped under the eyelid or on the surface of the eye, it scratched the cornea the first time the officer blinked after applying the Johnson’s directly to the eye.
Our OC crew currently allows students to use baby shampoo around the eyes but not directly in the eyes. Just thought our experiences could be useful.
