Police say the dogs started charging at other people in the neighborhood

LIMA, Ohio — Officials say an off-duty police officer was hospitalized after he was attacked by two neighborhood pit bulls in western Ohio.

The Lima News reports that the attack on Patrolman Mark Link occurred Monday morning as he was walking to his car.

Link was treated and released from a hospital after suffering bites to his head while trying to defend himself.

Police say the dogs started charging at other people in the neighborhood and had cornered an elderly woman in her yard the day before.

Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer says officers arrived at the scene and shot and killed the dogs to prevent further attacks.

The owner was cited for not having licenses for the animals, animals running at large and another unspecified city ordinance.
