San Jose officers living in RVs outside department

Overworked officers, who don’t have time to go home between shifts, are staying in RVs outside the police department

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Officers working mandatory overtime at the San Jose Police Department have been staying in RVs outside the department during their workweeks.

KPIX reports that officers who work 17-hour days, fight traffic, and commute from far towns, have resorted to staying in the mobile homes during the week and driving home on their off days.

According to the TV station, the city leaders didn’t know this was happening.

“It’s embarrassing for any city,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told KPIX.

Councilmember Johnny Khamis told the publication offering police officers more money is the solution.

There are many things we can do. Declaring an emergency isn’t gonna get the police officers out of their mobile homes, it’s actually going to exacerbate the problem,” Khamis said.

The city council will vote next week on whether to declare a state of emergency to redistribute more officers to the streets. The undermanned police department has been backfilling staffing shortfalls with overtime.
