One of the responding officers was struck in the face

PAULSBORO, N.J. — Police say officers responding to calls of a fight Saturday night were surrounded by a large crowd, and one officer was assaulted while arresting a suspect.

According to WPVI, officers were attempting to arrest one person and place her in the back of a patrol car when a crowd formed and they tried “to take the female from [the officer].”

“While they were trying to take the female, the officer was punched in the face,” Police Chief Vernon Marino said.

Marino told the news station the other officer had their body camera ripped off of their uniform. He said two people were arrested and more arrests are coming.

“Our concern is things could’ve went from bad to worse quickly,” Marino said. “Fortunately, with the aid of the body worn cameras, our officers will now have the ability to identify those who were fighting and those that failed to disperse when ordered to do so.”
