WOODLAND, Calif.- A manhunt involving hundreds of officers was launched after a California Highway Patrol Officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop, authorities said.
Officer Andy Stevens, 37, a commercial vehicle inspector, had made a traffic stop Thursday near this community about 15 miles northwest of Sacramento when the shooting took place, said Highway Patrol Chief Stan Perez.
More than 300 law enforcement officials were looking for a man wearing a black ball cap and driving a rusty black sedan. Authorities said several people saw the shooting.
A citizen called in the shooting, apparently using the officer’s own squad car radio, CHP spokesman Tom Marshall said.
Perez said a helicopter and several officers were there within minutes.
