ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police are searching for a suspect who shot an officer Saturday during a DWI stop.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, 31-year veteran Officer Lou Golson was struck twice by gunfire shortly after stopping the unidentified suspect who police later discovered was driving a stolen SUV.
Officer Golson returned fire, but it is unknown if any of the shots hit the suspect, who is believed to be a light-skinned male in his late 20s or early 30s.
The officer, who was struck in the torso, was transported to a hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Police released a blurry image of the suspect taken from the officer’s lapel cam, which is currently being analyzed by the FBI as officers continue a city-wide manhunt for the shooter, whose gun was recovered at the scene.
“The video lasts just seconds. Officer exits his vehicle, he approaches the (suspect’s) vehicle, shots are fired, the officer returns fire and the suspect flees. It happens very, very quickly,” Chief Gorden Eden said at a press conference.
“His [Officer Golson’s] road to recovery will be long and the family asks that we do not divulge the extent of his injuries, but I will tell you that they are serious injuries and we pray he will be able to return to work at the Albuquerque Police Department,” Eden said.
