BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An off-duty New York Police Department officer spending an evening with his family was shot and wounded by two men who robbed them, New York Daily News reported.
Officer Tramaine Oxley was in a Range Rover with his family when two armed men in a dark BMW pulled up with guns. Oxley was robbed of cash and jewelry at gunpoint before the Range Rover, driven by his cousin, sped off.
“At that point, the Ranger Rover left the scene to get away,” NYPD Chief of Department James O’Neill said to the publication. “They made a U-turn and were on the way back to the people who robbed them when at some point (the suspects) fired at the Range Rover. At another point (Oxley) fired four rounds.”
Oxley was hit in the arm and grazed in his chest. No one else was hurt in the shooting, officials said.
It has not been revealed why the officer and the Range Rover returned to the scene.
Police arrested a “career criminal” named Tori Saunders on June 29 in connection to the shooting. Saunders, 22, led police on a brief foot pursuit before he was detained. Police are still searching for other robber.
Oxley was already on leave for a leg injury. He is recovering in a hospital and seems to be in good spirits, NYPD clergy liaison Rev. Terry Lee told the publication.
“It’s a miracle,” he said to publication about Oxley’s survival.
An the investigation is ongoing.
This is the second officer that has been robbed at gunpoint in two weeks, but police don’t believe the two are related, officials said.
