NEW YORK — A judge has delayed the sentencing for a former New York Police Department officer who accidentally shot an unarmed man in a darkened public housing project stairwell.
The sentencing of Peter Liang was delayed as the judge decides whether to toss his manslaughter conviction in the 2014 shooting of Akai Gurley.
Liang’s attorneys say a juror initially said no one in his family had been accused of a crime. But the juror told a newspaper later that his father was sent to prison for accidentally shooting a friend to death.
The hearing will continue Thursday. Liang’s sentencing was scheduled for Thursday but postponed to next week. The prosecutor has recommended Liang not get prison.
Liang was fired after the verdict.
