ST. LOUIS — Police killed a gunman who opened fire on officers as they responded to a home invasion Tuesday.

Officers called to the scene initially approached an SUV idling in alley behind the house. A passenger in the vehicle pointed a gun at one of the officers, prompting the officer to fire, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

The vehicle drove away and police then exchanged shots with a man exiting the back of the house. The gunman who fired at officers, later identified as Brandon Jones, 22, was hit in the chest by police gunfire. He was declared dead at the hospital.

The two officers who fired their weapons were not injured, authorities said. They are police veterans of 23 years and 10 years and have been placed on administrative leave.

A patrol car responding to calls for backup reportedly crashed into a vehicle as it approached the scene, flipping over and injuring the officer and the other driver. Both were hospitalized and expected to recover.

The two suspects in the SUV were still at large Wednesday.
